Convergence

That is the new group subject for the niki page and obviously it means we are going to write out a script for Big Brother using the various social networks that are converged together. I even wrote profiles for a few of them:

Instagram

This little biddy is a global sensation bouncing on to the scene since 2010. Blonde, model and wild partier who likes to share with the world. Through her filtered eyes, there is never an ugly picture. Popular with celebrities, emos, hipsters and every other IPhone user. She may be an only child but selfish? No, she has strong connections with other housemates like Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr. Her vintage like style inspired by Polaroid’s makes anything look cool. Don’t let the pretty face fool you, she’s a feisty competitor and up against Vine to get the Video Crown.

Vine

Stand back, new kid on the block has arrived, his name is Vine a comedian by trade with rockstar confidence. Vine loves the limelight, with his lively attitude he’s been waiting for his 7 seconds of fame. He’s looking to win it all using Twitter as a connection to climb up the ranks. Whether this connection is just friendship or something more, Vine is definitely one to keep an eye on.

 Twitter

This non-stop chatter box loves to party, she may have been around since 2006, but her age has not defied her, if anything it has improved her skills in the social networking game. She’s a social butterfly and has seemed to make some strong connections in the house. However, there is a battle between Twitter and Facebook for the top spot, maybe it has something to do with the recent convergence between Facebook and Vine? Twitter needs to watch out for that one!

#26 Cause I haven’t said this already

I still don’t understand why we have these so called punishments if we don’t keep up to date with out work. I feels a little high school to me. And well, I hated high school. I thought the whole idea was to eliminate this prison concept that institutions seem to have, because I feel like I’m in a cell where it’s forcing me to be creative and I get punished if I don’t produce something.

“Blog whatever you like” they say. But what they really meant was “blog whatever you like as long it meets the required blog posts or otherwise you will be punished,”

Well I am going to include this as one of my posts as one that relates to the class. So deal with it, because technically it about the subject.

#25 The Long Tail (Response to Reading)

Readings, readings, readings. Every week. For more than one subject, it’s driving me insane. I say that we choose our own readings and then write them with some sort of link to the class (maybe then people would actually do it and we wouldn’t have this whole punishment thing)

Anyway, what I got from this one was about how products for niche markets are becoming increasingly popular, and making other products similar to it, also become more popular, with that whole “if you like this, then you should check out these:”

I see it all the time when I online shop:

It’s smart. Cause obviously I want to match my new clothes with a cool jacket and shoes, and the website wants to make more money. Then ofcourse you get the weekly personalised emails informing you there is a sale and often showing clothes similar to the ones you have bought- all because they know your style. Then it becomes this vicious circle where I keep buying clothes and the website gets more money until my savings account is drained and I will need to move back to New Zealand into my parents house.

Went on a tangent but oh well.

#21 Favourite 80s Movies: Tuff Turf (Fritz Kiersch, 1985)

So this film stars James Spader (before he became all creepy looking in Boston Legal) and also my favourite Robert Downey Jr. who plays the best friend!

It’s basically just the common tale of the new kid in school who falls for the gang leaders girlfriend and a bunch of stuff goes down. Good movie that you don’t need to think to hard about really. There is also a really long fight scene where you become unsure when the film is supposed to end and people just don’t seem to die, but eventually it does and they do and overall it is a good film with some awesome 80s fashion, and I think that it deserves some more credit

#20 Douglas (Response to reading)

“reading is directed creation”- Sartre

As if we are being guided what to think adn imagine, there is not complete control over what we see in our minds, however what we do see is only because of the writer. Books are supposed to express this element of freedom and arts, which is true for the writer, who is able to write about anything, yet the reader is gets “a strictly limited freedom”. Books are these incredible stories that captivate us and make us fall in love with the characters. We subconsciously create this idea of what is going on in the book in our heads, like Douglas suggests that we can only be given actions without any nouns or adjectives, yet we still have this image in our heads of the situation. Fantastic!

I know I could have talked about books ending and added something about hypertext, but I didn’t want to.
