It’s pretty clear from the start where this web series is going to take place – an office.
And with all the renovations that’s been happening at university, there were so many places we could check out, and we did when we went location scouting. From the places we looked into, we thought that a lot of the new study rooms and areas around campus would be a great environment to film in. Something that we took on board from our pilot was the setting, in that, we didn’t shoot in a basic, white-walled office area. We had filmed the pilot in a study area that had black and wooden walls which contrasted nicely with the costuming for that episode.
The new study spaces and rooms around campus has wooden or brightly coloured walls, and the entire design of it all is quite nice. Even the chairs aren’t your basic four-legged school chairs. Every room has its own uniqueness to it just like the characters in this series. And something else that we were going for in terms of the setting for the series was a creative industry office look, so the coloured rooms and unique interior designs were a nice touch.
But the things we knew we would struggle with was finding a quiet place to film and booking rooms. We wanted to avoid as much background nice as possible like in the pilot episode; we had that annoying airy, beeping atmospheric noise in the room. And since it’s also that time of the year, with only a couple of weeks left of classes and majority of the university are prepping for exams, booking rooms was going to be a struggle. And it was.
Something we knew we also had to do, regardless of the fact that we’re students at the university, is to follow production protocols, which in this case was getting a filming permit. But like I said, booking rooms has been a struggle so we need to find a place in order to apply for a permit. So we started to look into other places around the city. But with that, we also had to think about equipment and how we were going to get it to those places and back seeing as most of the equipment are somewhat heavy to carry.
I think as a future note, and despite the fact that we are most definitely more organised this time around, we shouldn’t keep location scouting in the back burner because we definitely did that even though it was only postponed for a week. Just with how this studio has been going, time really is of the essence.
