Wk4 Absence & Audio
Unfortunately, I was absent during the first week I was actually quite excited for. I am a big fan storytelling via radio/audio and was keen to participate in class discussion. Sadly I woke on Friday in quite a bit of pain which turned out to be appendicitis. I also am aware that the class was discussing vinyl – which I was also eager to explore as it is a medium I have always been somewhat intimidated by. Though, by chance, while I was in the hospital on VICE there was a segment on Jack White and his pressing plant in Detroit (my hometown). I couldn’t find a clip of what I watched but here is a different segment discussing it made by the company:
Though I do not use vinyl (though would like to) I recognized the feelings discussed in the reading. Growing up my family watched White Christmas every Christmas eve. Always on VHS. Though we eventually did switch and bought the updated DVD which had been refurbished and the quality of the images was much better. Though with these improvements – when I go to watch this movie at home I still almost always will try and find our VHS copy to watch instead. Though this may have more to do with a sense of memory and tradition rather than preference or sense of authenticity or other attributes described in the reading – I feel this is a sense romanticization of old media/technologies.
