The Library
Today in Wk2 of Old’s Cool we went to the Carlton Library and discussed what role libraries have to play as well as “the archive”
The Role of The Library?
A public library – in my opinion – plays a pivotal role in people’s access to education. When people are outside of the education system (specifically in the States) or from a lower economic class – the Library is essential for those people to have access to resources whether that be books, computers, music, movies, or educational resources. Growing up I spent quite a bit of time at my local library as it had a massive DVD collection. This was great even as Netflix became my go to as when that failed to have what I needed – the library rarely did.

Outside of gathering up movies and books to take home when my wallet was feeling lighter than usual, I spent the majority of my time at the library studying. To be immersed in an area where there was one priority – to learn – was very helpful when it came time to truly concentrate. The Library became a solace compared to everywhere else where distractions can be rampant.
How will I use the Library?
During our visit, we learned how to use the library search online and explored what resources were available to us as students. I imagine I will be using the library and its archive to deeply explore “old media”. As well as deepen my understanding of old media’s relation to current practices.
During class we were instructed to take a few pictures of the library. These free pictures represent the old/traditional (books), the new (wifi), and the constant (the study):
