Women’s History Month: Michelle Obama on International Women’s day
Michelle Obama for the past 7 years has proven herself to be a true role model for me and for others alike. In The United States it has become standard practice for First Lady’s to campaign for social issues during their time at the White house. Obama has continued this tradition and has spent her time as first lady speaking about the importance of being health with the Let’s Move Campaign. Most recently she has focused her efforts on the importance of girls receiving education across the world (see : Lets Girls Learn).
On Tuesday, on International Women’s Day Michelle Obama made a speech on the topic of women’s education. It is very easy for I and I assume many of you reading this (fellow female students at RMIT) to forget the privilege we have in receiving an education. I would encourage anyone who has a moment (around 20 minutes) to watch/listen to her speech.
A bit past midway through the speech Obama discusses the impact the hashtag #62milliongirls (referring to the 62 million girls around the world who are not in school) has made. This is a wonderful example of how new media/ social media has influenced social politics and how we engage with these issues.
