In one of my last posts I spoke about how much is too much of the subject. How much of them do you actually need to reflect or say what you want to say about them. It really does depend on the form of the project or piece you are making, who you are making it for and why. The speaking or recounting of a memory over the top of the images does automatically give it a documentary feel, however sometimes that doesn’t reflect what you want to say about them or in my experience it didn’t in this case. I like that there is more of Penelope’s voice however I think one of the most captivating things about Pennie is her sporadic introverted behaviour that makes her so enigmatic. When she speaks this much that quality goes and a stronger, more determined aspect of her personality is at the forefront of the piece. She sounds pretty onto it and you wouldn’t necessarily think that she was deeply introverted at times and reserved. It really does depend on what you want to highlight as the most important part of the person, especially in a short film project context you kind of need to make that choice. How am I going to represent this person? What part of their personality is the most interesting at this time? I can’t capture everything about her in a minute or 2 minute clip so I need to decide. I wish I had of realised this actually a little sooner. I have been trying to throw everything in there and make something as beautiful as I can about her but not necessarily highlighting one aspect using the techniques I’m learning in the edit. I’m restricted in my ability because I have only been using premiere for a couple of weeks there is so much I want to do but haven’t figured out how yet. It will take me more time to be comfortable with the software. But for a first attempt at editing I have to be okay with where I am at. I still have time to do another investigation on this though so I’ll have a look at this specific character trait exercise before the semester officially ends. This project is also something I want to continue and refine, so as a start this is a good place.
