Carol Vernallis’ ‘Experiencing Music Video: Aesthetics and Cultural Context‘ (2004)
Rohan said this reading would take 15 minutes…2 hours later. A great plate of food for thought while in early stages of concept development. I was glad to read this because of our projection concept, I have been thinking about what form these images will take and what kind of story they would tell. This reading made me think of a lot of different things;
- What exactly is it that we are projecting onto the artist and why, does it even matter why? Or do the images themselves even matter when they are so open for interpretation in this context anyway?
- How do the images being projected effect the artist? Is she aware of them? Is this a memory? Is she in control of the images or are they controlling her?
“Anti Narrative – Defying narrative conventions”
Pastiche Definition – “An artist work in a certain style that imitates that of another work, artist or period”
“The video moves to underscore the music, highlighting the lyrics and showcasing the star”
- What is being said without being portrayed literally? What can we imply?
- Story boarding. Even with the abstract images we have, what kind of story are we trying to tell? Do we need to give thought to the possibilities? Even if we aren’t going for a narrative structure, the images still have the potential for story and so does the song itself without anything being added onto it.
- Are we looking back in her life or into the future? Are we in the moment experiencing something that she is? Is she having a revelation? What is going on for her? What mood or feeling is being evoked here?
- What sections of the song can we use contrasting effects and images? Will there be different segments ? One with just darkness and backlighting and the other bright and powerful projections carrying the climax of the song? What will be the most powerful way we can show this?
- “Concealment and discovery of a topic rather than an enactment of it” – what mood is her song? What is she writing about?
- What does her song suggest on its own? What narrative is already embedded within it?
- What has transpired in this clip that is of significance? What realisation or experience has she undergone? What is that for Ali?
I really enjoyed Vernallis’ discussion on Aerosmiths ‘Crazy’. Liv Tyler and Alicia Silvers. So damn beautiful.
