Here’s a Moment

Pauls notes: When speaking about fiction (in previous courses) and writing a drama, there’s a big distinction between writing a script and writing a film. The script is about layout as go the traditions of making films from 110 years ago. Character backgrounds, conflicts, character obstacles and 90% of drama film, is based on these premises and filmmaking comes second therefore cinema comes second. What we are trying to do in this course is attempt to break down those traditions, break the form down and not have it outcome driven. The outcome is what I’m going to have by the end of the semester rather than having the end result being a big thing. There is no final film.

We are going to pitch in week 7 and that will be based on the way we are going to work and what we are going to work on. We are going to get into groups, we don’t know how, random, alphabetical. We need to be happy with working with who ever. In filmmaking you need to be interested in everything. Film is one of those rare things where you need to be interested in many different things.

We are looking at cinema not in drama or documentary form so not using those orthodox methods. “I want to do something, I’m not sure how I’m going to investigate it but I’m going to start investigating”.

It is an individual research project. I need to do things that are authentic to my own desires and interests. Whatever idea it is needs to be approached with honesty and humility. It can’t be labelled as either documentary or drama.

“Be inspired by a happening rather than a film concept”

It’s so true! There is so much pressure on having a completed project not just with film but many things in life. We can get so consumed with the outcome that we aren’t present throughout the exploration and so we miss so much along the way. This will be a great discovery on the smaller moments whatever they might be. Exploring form and moments in detail and see what can be grown from that more organically.
