A Noticeable Excursion

Federation Square is a destination, a meeting place and a tourist attraction. When I go there it’s to make a deliberate and conscious attempt to connect with my city, knowing that when I get there I will not have to do much to get information about what other people are doing and what events are happening.

Sitting on the steps underneath the main screen I receive information through different kinds of media such as flags, billboards, electric billboards, artwork, moving lights and images, people live promoting, brochures, pubic WIFI, MX’s and audio announcements all relating to music, film, art performances and exhibitions, sporting events and competitions, political and social events, conventions and other cultural festivals.

When looking above and into the background, I become aware that I’m under constant video surveillance, not just on the main public screen but on the steps, in the bathrooms, outside the cafe and inside Deakin Edge and ACMI. I’m giving silent permission to participate in other people’s media and potentially their own social media networks, I become part of an intentionally created public media site. Consciously, I step off of the street to engage with a live and deliberate public space intended to inform me about and connect me to the city I live in.
