Expertise Exercise Unpacked

The audio exercise: We started off with this pretty far out idea; that we would record different sounds in the street, with the premise of later recording our expert ability as having “super-sonic hearing”. The premise would be that as the protagonist sits on a balcony looking out at the street, he/she focuses (zooms in) on different events in the city and we (the audience) hear them supernaturally clear and unhampered. This ofcause just turned in to us walking around Swanston St, recording a mix of city sounds, that were naturally polluted. I never listened to the recordings because I knew they would not work with the expertise videos we ended up recording. But today I thought I’d give them a listen and mix them together. This was because I wanted to do something more with the media we had created and had gone off the idea of making an “experimental” expertise video. I used Adobe Audition which I haven’t opened since first semester. When listening to the sounds I found some recordings from the other group that had teamed with us for the video shoot. They, cleverly, had recorded their expertise sounds in a sound-proof space, creating very clear cut sounds. I mixed the samples of the two group’s sounds together. The mix I made is very experimental and a bit too Yoko Ono Number 9 for my liking but don’t think about that when you listen to it. I’ve called it Sci Fi School and when I was making it I was drawing inspiration from the soundscape of Blade Runner (1982) (which I have blogged about previously). Does is sound like a futuristic school lesson? That’s what I was aiming for any way.

Vision and audio recording: I never actually got a chance to film anything myself during this exercise. I did enjoy the process though. Working with others and watching how others work is always interesting.

Editing: Shit gets real. Here is a list of things I learnt about during the editing process.

  1. I understand a lot more about interlaced and progressive footage/technology. As well as the process of moving broadcast camera footage to a non-broadcast computer and using such footage in preimer. Yus!
  2. Merging/syncing sound: I never new this was possible. I have always done it by eye/ear! Yus, learning obvious basics of Premier
  3. Colour grading: This is the most exciting thing I started learning and will continue to learn. Just putting it out there that my colour grade for the video is poor. I’m not hindered. I can’t wait to investigate this art further. I want to learn more and get better at it. Yus!

Youtubes on Colour Grading

The video it’s self:

Look it’s not amazing but it has inspired me to perfect a small piece of my own. I was going for creepy David Lynch vibes with this one, hence the choice of invasive shots, unnerving soundscape and very obvious cool colours colour grade. Hope you feel it.
