Medias & Medium Technologies: The Internet

I was going to write a blog about some of the lecture material, but then I looked up the video blogger Nerdwriter1 from the lecture, and got totally captivated by his video essays…

Here is the first one I stumbled on…  It gives a very deep insight into the feeling of depression that you get when you watch Melancholia. I really loved this film, and had a very strong take on what it was about, so it was good to see what someone else thought, be it similar to my own take. But let’s talk about mediums here. Film is probably my favourite medium because of the way can be used to express human nature. But the Internet is arguably to most amazing and interesting medium. Why? One reason is because, as was discussed in the lectorial, different mediums create different experiences and the Internet provides the ability for everyday people from all over the world to share their beliefs, opinions, creations, and visions. Imagine if the Internet did not exist, I would never know how Nerdwriter1 felt about Lars Von Trier’s Melancolia, and say I did meet him and we started talking about it, he wouldn’t be able to present it in the same way to me verbally. As a medium the Internet gives the user many tools. In the lectorial we talked about how mediums could be visualised as a language.. What kind of language is the internet? Certainly one which most of the Western world speaks fluently and frequently. But who uses it to express meaningful things? Who uses it to talk shit? For the older generations it was a second language, for the generations to come it will be second nature. They will probably speak it much better than we could even imagine and they will make up their own slang.. In the lectorial Marvin (1988) was quotes in saying that the communication issues of electric media would consist of ‘who is inside and outside, who may speak, who may not, and who has authority and may be believed?’ How can this thought be applied to the Internet? Well we know who is inside and who is not. Perhaps the digital divide is closing, but it still exists along with other massive disparities between the first and the third world. Who may speak? Everybody may speak. And who is considered legitimate… many are not. Legitimacy aside, the Internet is a place where everyone with access can be a creator. So whether you just want to watch a Youtube about someone playing a video game, or you want to look at a photography blog, or read a review of a movie, you can. What does this ramble mean? Nothing it’s just a ramble. But i’m doing it on this blog… Which means that it will now ender into the world of blog ramblings… which would not be possible without the Internet. The internet is a medium thats affordances are almost unfathomable. And that is exciting and scary.
