The Video Essay

In this week (week 10) we discussed what a video essay actually is. What I found interesting about Nick Moore’s video is the amount of creative freedom given to those making a video essay. Coming from many years of structured essays and lab reports I felt relieved that it was finally being suggested that we break away from this structure. Some of my notes on the subject include a random stringing together of words such as ‘creatively respond’ and ‘rethink what an essay is.’

Things to remember:

The structure is informal. The sources and ideas can be a pot pourii. The citations need to be consistent, but how they are presented is up to the creator. Ideas can be used in juxtaposition. Experiment. The benefits of the video essay is that you can make them multilayered and textured. You can use rhythm of editing to your advantage. And lastly, you can narrate and lead the essay using voice over.

Now time to watch some essays.
