Reads For Week One: Passion Will Bloom

I found Adrian’s piece on blogging useful as I have never blogged before. I liked the way he deconstructed blogging and discussed developing your professional online voice.

I disagreed with the Ted Talk about passion. It was argued that one should not waste time looking for their passion but rather work hard at something, be the best, and focus deeply on a subject, and bam! Passion will bloom. I don’t think this idea can be applied so liberally, as I feel there are many people who work very hard at something they don’t have a strong passion for… only to find they still don’t feel passionate about it. In fact they feel trapped from spending so much time and energy on a profession they do no enjoy.  Perhaps I could be suggested that if you do not feel passionate about certain areas of your field, you could find a niche that interests you or apply what you know about your field to something that does interest you, and focus on that, in doing so, feeding passion, and becoming good in a specific field.

Speaking of passion, it was good to see that it was abundant in the first lecture. Although DJ Shadow did not grab me, I enjoyed that fact that our lecturer felt so deeply about it.
