Once again my group was subjected to a class workshop were we pitch our idea and have the class give us feedback. From this class discussion it was clear that we needed to clarify what media technologies and mediums are, and that we must make more direct links to our topic. At the moment we are planning our audio essay which we will be looking at social media and the Paris Terror Attacks last year. In our essay we would like to show how the event unfolded on social media. An article from BBC Trending outlines the role of social media during the attacks.
“Eyewitnesses logged onto their social networks to warn others about what was happening. It was an instinctive human reaction to tell others about the violence. Each word, image and video posted to sites like Twitter, Facebook and Instagram tell their own story. Many posted without the realisation that words written in seconds would have a legacy.”
It became clear to my group after the class discussion that despite being a good idea, we must make it clear that we are referring to media technologies and to condense our information to work with the five minuet time constraint. The option of perhaps using this example of social media and the Paris Attacks for the video essay, and using a more general discussion of our topic for the audio essay.
So it is clear that our group has a lot of work to do and decisions to make.
