One of my favourite television shows would have to be Chuck. The program features a nerdy guy who accidentally gets government secrets downloaded into his brain keeping him in a constant state of “danger, fear and anxiety.” Aside from the cleaver scripting and loveable characters, the thing I really love about the show is the music. Having made short films myself I know how difficult it is to find the perfect piece of music to suit a scene. I spend hours searching for music online to create the perfect mood. That is one thing that is done extremely well in Chuck.
First, the shows theme song is catchy and fun, and really sets the mood. Additionally, over the five seasons the editors have used some particular sound tracks numerous times in action scene which works very well. However for more intense sequences, music is carefully selected to match the scene perfectly.
One of my favourite scenes was in season three when Chuck and Sarah finally start to begin their life together. It had been established in previous episodes that Sarah doesn’t have a favourite band or style of music, so Chuck chooses a song for her and he chooses Feeling Good by Nina Simone. This song worked perfectly with this scene. The lyrics are “it’s a new dawn, its a new day, its a new life for me,” which reflects their relationship both in the present and into the future.
