John Cage was quoted “everything we do is music.” I believe this is were he got the inspiration to compose 4′ 33″. In this piece a pianist walks to the piano and sits down. He opens and closes the lid of the piano a few times over the course of a few minutes and then gets up and walks off stage. He does not play the piano throughout the entire performance. All that is heard is the noises made by the audience and that is the music of the performance. It would have been very interesting and almost awkward to have been in the audience when Cage’s piece was first performed. In the past I have watched silent films and they are almost uncomfortable for audiences. In my cinema studies screening last week we watched a silent film and you could hear every noise. You could here someone typing, a couch, a sneeze, someone dropping their pen, and for viewers it becomes very uncomfortable. But at the same time, it forces you to be aware of your surroundings and all those sounds you hear all the time but you usually ignore.
