MMoW#something: MEETING WITH DP

UPDATES

Had a meeting with my DP, Mustafa, to go through the shots in each coverage style.

We borrowed a Canon 5D Mark II and tripod from the techs, and then used a table and two chairs in the atelier space on level 2 in building 9.

We worked out the equipment we’d need for certain shots. We pinpointed the shots that were going to be tricky and that we needed to think about how to go about shooting them. We practiced all of the shots.

Tricky shots:

  • The ‘square’ shot (Anderson-Yeoman style). Dolly right (under table), rise up (above table), dolly left. We still need to work out how to do this. But I want to try it even if we end up doing it handheld. It’s about the idea more than it’s about making it perfect.
  • The bird’s-eye shot (Anderson-Yeoman style). Should work on a Miller tripod.
  • ECUs (Aronofsky-Libatique style). We’ve decided to use the 24-105mm zoom lens  – it seems to be able to get closer (or at least look closer) to an object without losing focus.
  • Should we change up lighting for the different coverage styles? I’d love a silhouette of the characters and to have the cigarette smoke illuminated in the Aronosfky-Libatique version. And I’d also love a similar silhouette and bright smoke in a particular frame during the Lubezki shot. But it’s not essential.
  • Need to practice the Lubezki tracking shot and work out its kinks.
