W4. Critiquing own sketch vid.
I’m going to discuss my week 3 slow, single shot video.
I really like this video. I like my choice of honey (refrigerated) dripping as something slow. I like the shot – the soft focus alongside the white, flaring sun in the background, which illuminates the golden honey (and the honey bubbles), giving the whole image an amazing ethereal quality. The low angle framing is nice, although it probably would have been better if more of the spoon had been shown. It’s visually appealing to see a glass fill up so rapidly with honey. However, I wonder if it would have been more visually appealing to watch happen at its normal slow speed – I feel like the fast motion doesn’t allow appreciation of the gentle, smooth motion that the honey falls in. In fact, the fast motion kind of makes it feel uncomfortably hasty and choppy – completely the opposite of what honey actually falls like. In this sense, the fast motion may not have been the best choice for the purposes of fulfilling the brief of filming something slow. The films comes to a conclusion with the thinner honey drip, but this also occurs too quickly to really register. It sort of rushes the ending. Again, not the best choice in terms of the brief. One other area that could be improved upon is sound – music, or even just atmos, could be added to give the video a little more ‘colour’.
