Absent Only in a Physical Form

Progress in our group project this week felt a bit disjointed, largely to myself and Ariff missing the Thursday class due to illnesses.

Thankfully, Daniel wasn’t left in the deep end too much. He and I were able to meet earlier in the work and complete our collaboration contract to a reasonably high standard. We also shared emails during the day so that Ariff and I could be well informed about any tasks that we would need to complete, or any ideas/changes that were floating around. This worked well enough that I don’t believe we suffered too much from the setback, but any level of proper discussion is better than none.

The first task for us all to do does not require a high level of collaboration, which helps when we have not seen each other this week. We each have to supply an annotated bibliography with at least 4 entries by next lesson. This task is not a huge undertaking, and is helped by the fact that each of us had done some level of preliminary research prior to this.

My only concern at this point in the project is that our idea is heavily grounded in research, yet we haven’t established what form our media product will take. Audiences is such a general concept that any form of media product would be applicable, so we just need to run with everyone’s strengths. I know Daniel is quite passionate about music, so perhaps something sound orientated would work. I do feel like a website format would suit our current needs, as it would allow continuous editing and discussion about what we are presenting. This would be disappointing from a creative standpoint, and I feel like we would not be engaging in the ideas presented as well as we could. Under time constrains and lack of group discussion about the product, this may well be the best decision though.

I was raised as a lover of films, becoming enamoured with worlds presented on the silver screen in 'Star Wars' and 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' before I had even entered Kindergarten. This is what first got me interested in pursuing media studies, but I hope to expand my knowledge beyond film through what RMIT can teach me.
