Ready Camera One– W4

In this week’s class, We discuss Lamb’s article “Narrative Form and the British Television Studios 1955-1963” (2014). And get to know how British television studios between 1955 and 1963 utilized physical set design to influence different narrative formats. By analyzing the spatial layout and resource utilization of studios, the article delved into the biases formed in the production of single plays and series.

The article first points out how the design of television studios shapes the production methods of single plays and series, emphasizing the constraints of physical space on creative freedom. Lamb notes in the article that the utilization of studio space directly impacts the aesthetic of television narrative, and this layout and utilization of space are directly related to the visual presentation and narrative depth of television dramas. Reflecting on this, we can consider how spatial configuration constrains and provides opportunities for innovative expression. For example, how fixed cameras and limited space restrict the dynamism of series and audience experience. The article also discusses the relationship between technology and aesthetics, exploring how the allocation of technical resources in the production of single plays and series either facilitates or hinders stylistic innovation. The production of “Armchair Theatre” enhances visual storytelling through dynamic camera techniques and complex sets, where the interaction between the camera and sets adds spatiality to the performance (Lamb, 2014).

Furthermore, the article explores how the differences between single plays and series are institutionalized and culturalized, leading to biases. Single plays are often valued for their unique entertainment form and higher artistic value, while series are often seen as more commercialized. Investigating how these biases influence creators’ choices and television station scheduling strategies is a topic worthy of further exploration.

In summary, the physical production conditions of television dramas reflect cultural and aesthetic values. As cultural products, television dramas’ production practices reveal societal values and expectations. By studying the design and utilization of television studios, we can understand how broadcasting institutions shape specific cultural products and audience experiences through technology and spatial configuration.

Ready camera one — week3

This week has been very fulfilling. We discussed how online talk shows in the digital age maintain success and audience loyalty amid the constantly changing media landscape. This topic sparked many interesting insights and deep reflections, making us realize that in the digital age, the success of online talk shows depends not only on the humor and creativity of the content but also on interaction and engagement with the audience. With the rise of social media, audiences are no longer passively watching shows but are becoming part of them.

Jeffrey J (2009) mentioned that with the diversification of content in morning talk shows, late-night talk shows have become increasingly popular, clearly differing in form from most other online content. This point has prompted me to think deeply about the form of talk shows. Traditional morning talk shows attract a large audience by humorously discussing hot topics, while late-night talk shows provide a relaxed atmosphere for viewers to unwind at the end of a tiring day through humor and profound viewpoints.

For this A1 project, our group decided to focus on love because we unanimously believe that this theme can resonate with guests, who can share their thoughts sincerely and comfortably in a relaxed atmosphere. I served in the DA role, and I was happy with the cooperation with my teammates. During the preparation and shooting of the program, we encountered some difficulties. Since it was my first time serving as a DA, I was a bit confused about my position and whether I needed to wear a walkie-talkie. Fortunately, my teammates reminded me in time and helped me find the right position. I think our camera composition was excellent, with each shot perfectly capturing the performance of the hosts and guests. The smooth transitions between shots at the beginning of the program left a deep impression, which I consider a success on our part. In the future, I will pay more attention to fully understanding the workflow before taking on any role and ensuring smooth communication among team members. The team performed excellently in overcoming difficulties, which gives me more confidence in future collaboration. I also plan to spend more time discussing and planning with the team before each program to ensure that we consider all possible challenges in the production process. I firmly believe that through the efforts and close cooperation of the team, we will be able to create more excellent and successful programs, bringing audiences more interesting and meaningful content.

Ready camera one — week 2

This week’s class delved into Paul Dwyer’s “Understanding Media Production” on “Friends.” The author conducted an in-depth analysis of the shooting scenes and pre-production details in the series, giving me a whole new understanding of the production process behind successful television shows. Through Dwyer P’s (2019) exposition, I understood the differences in production between radio drama and television programs, especially the challenges of shooting time and photographic techniques involved in television programs.

In television program production, directors, cinematographers, and other production staff must collaborate to ensure each scene achieves the expected effect. They face various challenges, such as how to complete the shooting within a limited time and how to utilize photographic techniques to present visual effects. These challenges require advanced technical skills, creativity, and good teamwork to cope with emergencies and overcome various obstacles. I will apply these concepts to my A1 project to ensure the smooth recording of our program.

In the rehearsal of the talk show on Friday, I took on two key roles: visual switching and lighting technician. As a visual switcher, my responsibility is to ensure that the overall visual effects and presentation of the program reach the best state. I need to pay close attention to the composition, lighting, and images of each shot, ensuring that they vividly present the content of the program and coordinate with other shots and the theme of the program.

Holland P (2017) mentioned that lighting is one of the most important factors in television program production, which can affect the visual effects and atmosphere of the program. Lighting technicians typically manipulate the intensity, positioning, and color temperature of the lighting to capture optimal shots and convey the program’s atmosphere and emotions. In my role as a lighting technician, I must calibrate the brightness, positioning, and color temperature of the lights based on the diverse scenes and moods within the program, effectively portraying its emotional depth and ambiance. I meticulously oversee the shooting outcomes of each frame to guarantee that the lighting faithfully represents the expressions and sentiments of the hosts and guests, facilitating a deeper audience engagement with the show.

A5 pt2 Studio Review

Studio Reflection

Watching our film at a cinema was both thrilling and unique; I also had the privilege of witnessing three other groups’ works; each group’s film represented its own artistic adventure: turning emotions, thoughts, and creativity into visuals and music. Two particular films that touched my soul deeply were “The Omniverse” and “Tare”. These director’s profound reflections revealed by each film offered unique views on themes such as human nature, the universe, and life itself; watching these two films also opened my mind to other perspectives on these topics.

I had been following the work of “The Omniverse” group closely before. Their final project once again left me in awe. This film is filled with imaginative sci-fi elements and delves deeply into complex themes such as the universe, time, and multiple realities. It’s not only impressive but also highlights the importance and influence of synthetic media today. Their work showcases the multifaceted potential of synthetic media, ingeniously intertwining science, philosophy, and emotions, evoking profound contemplation and emotional resonance in the audience. The sci-fi imagination in the film presents the boundless possibilities of synthetic media in creative expression. Through visual effects and special techniques, the audience is transported to dimensions of the universe and time that are nearly impossible to achieve in traditional media.

The choice of music and dubbing not only enhances the emotional and tense atmosphere but also deepens the audience’s immersion in the story. This once again affirms how synthetic media possesses unique capabilities in emotional and affective communication. The work of “The Omniverse” group’s creation transcends the boundaries of a mere film; it’s a voyage of intellectual exploration. They adeptly interweave science, philosophy, and emotions into the narrative, prompting viewers to contemplate the profound essence of human existence.

The film “Tare” excels in various aspects, including cinematography, plot, and post-production. It is an outstanding work in every sense. The movie takes the audience on a captivating emotional journey from the beginning.

The plot is intricately designed, seamlessly blending the concept of synthetic media with Rose’s internal conflicts, creating an engaging fictional world. The film begins with Rose stumbling upon duplicates of herself after a breakup. Each person represents different aspects of her identity, reflecting how social media and synthetic media shape and influence people’s self-identity. This concept cleverly combines science fiction elements with contemporary societal issues, prompting the audience to contemplate self-awareness and the influence of social media deeply. The film is rich in emotional depth. As the audience follows Rose’s journey, they go through her inner struggles and the process of self-acceptance with her, creating a strong emotional resonance that makes the film unforgettable. The production quality of the film is also remarkable. The skilled use of cinematography and post-production techniques fills the film with visual surprises. Post-production skills such as dynamic cinematography, color grading, sound design, and editing assembly all showcase the professionalism of the production team.

Another Studio: The use of photography

I haven’t done any research into “The use of photography” before. I have a keen interest in photography but for a variety of reasons I haven’t had the chance to explore this field.

The work “Melbourne’s Palette” has shown me the charm and expressive power of photography. It takes the unique colors of Melbourne’s city center as its theme, capturing the diversity of different areas of the city through the lens, presenting Melbourne as a unique multicultural city. Each photograph is like a vivid painting, vividly showcasing the unique atmosphere and cultural heritage of Melbourne. The photographer skillfully combines natural landscapes, architecture, transportation, and everyday life through excellent composition and advanced photography techniques. Each color carries a unique story, allowing the audience to not only appreciate the visuals but also deeply feel the emotions and meanings embedded in them. This expressive power gives the work a deeper level of appeal.

I also really like the work “BEAUTY OF SUNSETS.” It highlights the emotional experience of a person’s inner world, presenting a complex interplay of emotions and insecurity.

The protagonist of the work is filled with anxiety and insecurity. Nonetheless, she doesn’t evade these concerns; instead, she bravely confronts them. She goes to the beach, where the rhythmic crashing of waves and the captivating allure of the sunset envelop her. This scene symbolizes tranquility and peace, becoming her refuge to settle her mind. Through the images, the audience can deeply experience the emotional state of the protagonist without the use of words but through the skillful use of visual elements. This approach allows the audience to feel a more profound connection to her inner world, creating further resonance.

This taught me that there are many other methods to communicate feelings and that those techniques aren’t just limited to words. Images, symbols, and other visual components can occasionally more effectively represent the essence of emotions, facilitating audience resonation.

Synthetic Video A4

Part A

In what ways do you hope your final work (whether individual or group produced) engages its audience and communicated a key concern of the studio?

Although our movie “Greed” was shot in a room, we used various camera techniques and music to make this singular setting more vivid and captivating. We aimed to capture the audience’s attention through these subtle cinematic languages and creative cinematography techniques. For instance, we employed close-ups, slow motion, and specific angles to highlight the emotions and actions of the characters, showcasing the delicate relationships and emotional entanglements among them.

Moreover, we meticulously curated the film’s soundtrack to ensure it harmonized seamlessly with the movie’s narrative, rhythm, and emotional nuances. This deliberate selection of music was intended to craft an immersive viewing experience for the audience. Research has shown that film music can be considered a secondary source of emotion, exerting a unique influence on the audience’s emotions (Cohen, 2001). The music’s rise and fall synchronized flawlessly with the emotional fluctuations within the film, enabling the viewers to delve further into the profound emotional layers of the story.

Most importantly, we aim to convey through “Greed” the core issues that concern the studio. This film is not just a story about greed but a warning reflecting the contemporary synthetic media landscape. In this age of information explosion, the rapid development of synthetic media technology has blurred the line between reality and falsehood for many. Synthetic media can be employed to disseminate misinformation, fake news, and propaganda, potentially having profound repercussions on individuals, communities, or even entire nations (Pathak 2023). “Greed” explores a fundamental question: What are the consequences when synthetic technology falls into the hands of those who pursue short-term gains? Our protagonist, by selling counterfeit products for immense profits, embodies the greed inherent in humans when faced with temptation. She also uses a magical bowl, driven by her own desires, ultimately leading to her death. This serves as a deep reflection on many individuals blindly pursuing materialism and fame by any means today.

The studio’s core focus is to examine the current state, advantages, disadvantages, and global trajectory of synthetic media. Through “Greed,” we want to convey to the audience that technological advancements are meant to improve people’s lives rather than lead us into the depths of greed. In reality, we should be vigilant against fraudulent activities that exploit technology and constantly remind ourselves not to be lured by materialism and to stay true to ourselves.

Imagine you are going to keep working on that media piece (e.g. to screen it somewhere else like a festival, or develop it into a different kind of work, and so on) – what would be the core things you want to improve and extend and why?

If we keep working on our project, I think we will need to prepare more professional film and video equipment. Because this is our first time shooting a 7-minute film, I think we were overly confident before the shoot. We initially thought that having some additional lighting and a camera would be enough to achieve a cinematic-level production. However, we realized after shooting all the footage that our equipment fell far short of our expectations. As I primarily relied on handheld shooting, even slight hand tremors became glaringly evident in the final footage, particularly during zoomed-in sequences. There were instances when we had to resort to using smartphones for certain shots due to a shortage of cameras. However, upon importing the smartphone footage to the laptop, it became apparent that the image quality lacked the clarity and detail of the dedicated camera shots. When we amalgamated these two sets of footage, the visual continuity fell short of our expectations. Unfortunately, owing to the stringent project deadline, we had no alternative but to make do with the available equipment, a decision that I find somewhat regrettable in hindsight.

If possible, I think we might choose to invest in more locations and props for our shoot. Concerning locations, we initially selected a fixed indoor set due to budget and time constraints. While this added some limitations to the film, it also presented us with creative challenges. With more resources and time, I would like to explore outdoor locations to showcase the protagonist’s life and social environment, thereby enhancing the storyline. In terms of props, we could make them more elaborate and detailed. For instance, the magical takeout and counterfeit products that the protagonist sells could be designed to appear more mysterious and sophisticated, making them more convincing to the audience. From a technical perspective, we aim to delve deeper into post-production tasks. This includes meticulous color correction, immersive sound editing, and the incorporation of special effects, all intended to enrich the film’s visual and immersive attributes. I firmly believe that in the realm of sound, the inclusion of well-crafted background music and sound effects can significantly elevate the audience’s overall viewing experience.

Part B

When I confirmed the group members for our project in class, we began enthusiastic discussions about the storyline. We brainstormed many interesting plot ideas, and ultimately, we unanimously decided to shoot the film “Greed.” In the initial preparation phase, we first determined what shooting equipment, props, locations, and everyone’s availability were required. We then selected Yuyao, who among us had the best acting skills, as our female lead.

With everything in place, we moved on to the production phase. We chose Yuyao’s living room as the “studio” for our shoot. In advance, we arranged the living room to make it look like the hideout of a sophisticated counterfeit goods operation. During the shoot, my roles were director and cameraman.

Before shooting each scene, I engaged in thorough script discussions and analysis with the actors, especially regarding the actions and emotions of each character in every shot. To better convey the emotions and atmosphere of each moment, we also referenced many classic film scenes, aiming to draw inspiration and add depth and artistic flair to our work. For instance, I delved into several films with themes similar to ours, analyzing how they conveyed emotions and plot through cinematography, sound effects, and editing. Even during the shoot, I provided real-time verbal guidance to the actors on adjusting their actions and expressions. I found this method effective and capable of unlocking the actors’ potential. It also clarified our vision of what we wanted to achieve and sparked many innovative ideas.

During the shoot, we faced several challenges. As all of us in the group were newcomers to filmmaking, many of the shooting techniques and on-set execution were not yet familiar to us. We spent a significant amount of time experimenting with and adjusting camera movements, focus, and angles. We conducted numerous rehearsals and pre-shoots to stabilize the camera and prevent other equipment from appearing in the film frame. Lighting was also a major concern. We aimed to create lighting effects that were both realistic and dramatic, requiring many experiments. I coordinated with the lighting technician in advance to address lighting angles and actor positioning during the shoot.

To enrich the film’s sound effects and overall audiovisual experience, we conducted on-location sound recording. Although our initial plan was to use pre-existing background music, we decided to create foley sound effects ourselves to enhance the immersion of the film. This decision increased our workload but also made our film more impressive.

In the post-production phase, we meticulously edited the raw materials, striving to create a seamless flow between all the shots. Additionally, we performed color grading to enhance the texture and emotions of the visuals. During this process, we compared various color tones and styles and ultimately chose a color scheme that had both texture and realism. We employed a variety of visual effects to enhance the visual impact on the audience. To further emphasize the theme and emotions, we fine-tuned the sound effects and background music. Especially during the climax, we selected tense and suspenseful sound effects to create a thrilling atmosphere for the audience. We also incorporated some field-recorded sound effects and AI-generated sounds to enhance the audience’s immersion. In terms of editing, we experimented with different transition techniques and pacing to ensure that each cut flowed seamlessly from the previous scene, providing a smooth viewing experience for the audience. Regarding the use of special effects, we avoided overloading and ensured that each effect served the plot and theme. As an illustration, during pivotal moments, we strategically employed slow-motion and zoom techniques, enabling the audience to intensify their focus on the characters’ emotions and actions. Furthermore, we incorporated background blurring and depth-of-field effects to enhance the prominence of the main subjects and characters, thereby adding a multidimensional quality to the visuals.

Furthermore, this project has underscored the paramount significance of teamwork. Every member of the team possesses their own set of skills and a distinct perspective. It is only through proficient communication and seamless collaboration that we can guarantee the project’s progression unfolds seamlessly. Nevertheless, it is undeniable that within the group collaboration, certain conflicts and frictions arose. Undoubtedly, each individual harbors their own opinions and creative concepts, and at times, these ideas may clash. For example, we had intense discussions about the shooting techniques for certain scenes and the interpretation of characters. But it was through this continuous exchange and collision of ideas that our creativity became richer and more diverse. I deeply appreciate every team member who approached different opinions with an open mind. While there were disagreements, each one was in pursuit of the perfection of the film.

Upon the completion of “Greed,” a profound sense of pride washed over me. Every frame, and every sound, bears a testament to the tireless dedication of our team. While acknowledging that there remains ample space for enhancement, this endeavor undeniably stands as the fruit of our collective labor and a priceless learning experience for me within the realm of filmmaking. I also learned a lot from Minna, Jacklyn, and Yuyao. Jacklyn’s organizational and coordination skills left a profound impression on me. Whether it was communicating with actors or collaborating with other team members, she ensured that everything went according to plan. Whenever a problem arose, Jacklyn was able to calmly analyze it and quickly find the best solution. Her leadership and judgment were inspiring to me and played a crucial role in the smooth progress of the entire project.

Yuyao’s excellent performance in acting is also worth noting. As the female lead, she not only had to carry the main storyline but also convey the emotions and personality of her character in every shot. Her in-depth research of the character and countless rehearsals made her performance in front of the camera authentic and moving. Every time I saw her performance on camera, I was impressed by her professionalism and acting skills.

Minna, in her capacity as the lighting technician, assumed a pivotal role in our project. Lighting, being an indispensable facet of cinema, has the potential to craft the ambiance for the narrative, articulate the characters’ emotions, and imbue scenes with vibrancy. While Minna’s expertise in lighting may not have reached professional heights, I did witness her ardor and advancement in the role of a lighting technician throughout this endeavor.

Lastly, I would like to express my gratitude to my team members once more. It is their unwavering diligence and tireless dedication that culminated in the realization of “Greed.” Looking ahead, I eagerly anticipate the prospect of collaborating with them anew to fashion more indelible creations.

 Part C

The pitch of the “The Omniverse” team is truly impressive. Their creativity and production skills stand out among the many pitches, presenting the audience with a captivating story world.

Chloe, Jacquelyn, and Owen have masterfully crafted a vivid dichotomy between the story’s central characters. This contrast serves as a focal point in the narrative. On one side, we are introduced to a scientist who, once brimming with ambition and self-assuredness, plunges into the depths of despair and self-doubt following a catastrophic experiment failure. This character’s journey allows the audience to keenly empathize with the anguish of setbacks and disappointments, forging a profound emotional connection. Conversely, the young scientist embodies hope and ambition, standing at the outset of a scientific odyssey, filled with curiosity and exhilaration for the uncharted territories of knowledge. This character breathes fresh vitality and optimism into the film, kindling the audience’s anticipation and positive sentiments. This stark juxtaposition not only infuses the film with dramatic tension but also offers the audience an enthralling narrative arc. The intrigue surrounding the potential impact of these two characters on each other and their shared evolution, as they confront challenges and strive to realize their individual aspirations, serves as a compelling narrative linchpin. The emotional resonance stemming from this dynamic is both profound and authentic, wholly engrossing the audience in the story. It enables me to intimately experience and partake in this journey teeming with trials and personal growth, establishing a deeper rapport with the narrative.

Furthermore, the Omniverse setting is incredibly captivating. This universe boasts highly advanced technology and possesses the capability for interdimensional travel. However, its understanding of time travel is relatively limited. This adds profound elements of science fiction to the story, thrilling the audience. Audiences will be transported into a universe teeming with wonder and enigma, where every scene promises surprises and avenues for discovery. Concurrently, the Omniverse stands at the precipice of annihilation, injecting a palpable sense of urgency into the film. It leaves me eagerly anticipating whether the protagonists can salvage this fate, creating a dramatic tension that keeps one on the edge of their seat and fully engrossed in the unfolding plot.

The meticulous preparation undertaken by their team during the pre-production phase can be aptly described as exemplary, playing a pivotal role in ensuring the film’s high-quality production. Their exceptional prowess in scriptwriting has established a robust underpinning for the story’s triumph. The inventive crafting of the opening scene, marked by painstaking camera choreography and masterful utilization of visual effects, proficiently conveys the protagonist’s inner turmoil and historical traumas, facilitating a profound comprehension of the character’s emotional landscape. This emotional bedrock serves as a steadfast scaffold for the film’s subsequent progression, leaving the audience intrigued and eagerly anticipating the unfolding narrative.

Undoubtedly, their professional approach stands out as a pivotal factor in the success of their production. Their deliberate selection of professional tools, including green screens, high-end cameras, and expert lighting equipment, underscores their unwavering dedication to the craft of filmmaking. The astute utilization of these resources not only elevates the visual excellence of the film but also enriches the storytelling aspect. Consequently, this deepens the audience’s immersion into the cinematic realm. As a consequence, viewers become completely absorbed in the storyline, becoming active participants in the main characters’ adventures and personal development, as if they were genuine companions on the journey.

The work of “The Omniverse” team is undeniably a captivating cinematic creation. Their storytelling, character dynamics, universe setting, and production quality are all highly impressive. I am eagerly looking forward to watching the full version of the film and witnessing firsthand the presentation of this exhilarating story.

Assignment#2

  1. What were you trying to achieve in terms of critically communicating about synthetic media and explain the method in which the editing process was used to attempt this?

In the era of synthetic media, we find ourselves amidst a sea of overflowing information, whether originating from social media, news websites, or other digital channels, all converging like surging waves. As Jon M. Garon (2023) points out, the development of synthetic media has transcended the creation of static images, even encompassing the realm of generating video clips from textual prompts. In this complex environment, nurturing critical thinking and information discernment skills in people becomes paramount. The goal of digital literacy education is to empower individuals with the ability to assess the sources, reliability, and potential danger of information, and to stay vigilant amidst the deluge of information. The opening of my film this time aims to prompt the audience to deeply contemplate this issue.

The opening depicts the life of a person living alone, who, after work, effortlessly orders any food they desire using a food delivery app. This illustrates the convenience of information retrieval in the age of synthetic media, while simultaneously exposing the issue of varying information quality. Information overload blurs the lines between truth and falsehood, objective and subjective. Bonfanti (2020) mentions, “Deepfake technology represents a sophisticated and more complex tool to influence decision-making processes and the perception of community members through deception.” This viewpoint highlights how false information might impact people’s decisions and perspectives. Thus, in the age of information, cultivating critical thinking becomes a crucial skill to navigate complex information landscapes. Critical thinking involves thoughtful consideration, multi-angle analysis, and rational judgment. It entails more than just accepting or rejecting a viewpoint. With critical thinking, we can better understand the logic behind information, preventing us from falling into the trap of misleading or false information.

Furthermore, information manipulation is another alarming issue. In the world of synthetic media, anyone can publish information, some of which might be meticulously designed and presented by malicious individuals to influence emotions and concepts. “Due to the increasing democratization of content creation tools, anyone has the opportunity to become a creator and distribute their content to a wide audience.” (PAI 2023). Hence, we must raise our awareness of information manipulation. By mastering common techniques of information manipulation, we can better identify and resist potential deception and manipulation within information. The sudden appearance of the mysterious person’s hand in the video becomes a warning for every viewer. Warning people to remain vigilant at all times, avoiding falling into the traps of misleading information. Only through cultivating critical thinking can we maintain mental clarity amidst this surging ocean of information, make informed judgments, and not be swayed by falsehoods and misleading information.

  1. How did your preproduction/production/post-production process go and what would you do differently/improve next time?

Before conceptualizing the script, I strongly felt my enthusiasm for the suspense genre continuing. While crafting the storyline, I invested a lot of thought into it. Especially after studying the three-act narrative structure in the past two weeks, I realized that an engaging plot not only requires an intriguing storyline but also adheres to this narrative structure to ensure compactness and tension in the story. The inspiration for the script stemmed from a horror story a friend shared with me a year ago, and its plot remained vivid in my mind. Thus, I took this story as the core of the plot’s development and then adapted and expanded upon it to better suit cinematic storytelling.

In the pre-production phase, I dedicated ample time to researching and conceptualizing the plot, which laid a strong foundation for the entire production. However, reflecting on this stage, I realize I should have possibly started brainstorming more broadly right from the beginning, not limiting myself to just the horror story my friend shared. Next time, I will initiate brainstorming earlier, encompassing a wider range of suspenseful elements to have more choices while constructing the storyline.

The production phase is the pivotal step in turning creativity into reality. I made efforts to find suitable actors and cinematographers, ensuring resonance and collaboration. As I played the main character, I even self-taught acting skills online. Despite facing some time constraints, I managed to maintain the shooting quality of key scenes. However, this experience also taught me that initiating communication with the team earlier, sharing my vision, and listening to their feedback can significantly enhance the collaborative atmosphere and improve the quality of the final work.

In the post-production phase, due to shooting many shots, I spent lots of time editing, adding background music, and adjusting special sound effects. I utilized various plugins to modify the original raw audio, enhancing it with a sense of suspense and intrigue. The challenge during this stage was maintaining plot coherence while enhancing audio-visual effects. Yet, finding the desired sound effects for some scenes proved difficult. I believe that next time I can start looking for sound effects and background audio during the preparation phase to better integrate the film’s emotions and atmosphere with audio-visual elements.

  1. What you thought the most and least successful parts of your Film Opening Scene were, and why so?

I believe the most successful aspect of my project is my shot angles and composition. I captured numerous angles of shots to enhance storytelling and immerse the audience more deeply in my film. Filmmaking relies heavily on different shot angles to express not just the tale but also emotions and direct viewer attention in addition to presenting the story. To draw attention to important elements, such as the main character’s horrified expression and the enigmatic hand extending from behind the curtain, I used close-up footage. These shots allowed the audience to better understand the plot context and the character‘s emotions. I believe these choices and applications of shot composition successfully created the emotional atmosphere I desired, and when I showed the rough cut to Cat, I effectively captured her attention. Additionally, this diversified shot composition and angles injected vitality into the opening of the film, sparking curiosity among viewers to continue exploring the subsequent content.

In my view, the least successful aspect lies in the editing and transitions. Despite capturing engaging shots during filming, I found that in post-production, some transitions were not as smooth as I would have liked. This could lead to jarring and unnatural moments for the audience while watching. Particularly, in certain scene transitions, I might not have fully considered the coherence and transition methods between different shots, causing viewers to potentially feel disoriented during these switches. This may impact the overall viewing experience, potentially diverting the audience’s attention and affecting the conveyance of the plot and emotions. To address these issues, I believe I should pay more attention to editing and transitions in future projects, ensuring coherence between different shots while enhancing emotional conveyance through editing at critical plot twists. Ensure that future works excel in both narrative storytelling and visual experience.

This week, we delved into a crucial technique for post-production known as colour grading. This technique plays a pivotal role in the post-production process of filmmaking, not only for aesthetics but also for profoundly influencing the audience’s emotional connection to and understanding of the story.

By manipulating the colours and tones within a film, we have the ability to create distinct visual effects, emphasise emotional atmospheres, and visually guide the audience’s attention. For example, enhancing warm tones can evoke feelings of warmth and intimacy, while using cooler tones might convey detachment or tension. These subtle adjustments can elicit unconscious emotional resonance within the audience, enhancing their immersion in the film.

However, colour grading is more than just technical manipulation; it involves the expression of art and creativity. Each colour and nuanced adjustment can yield vastly different effects, requiring the artist’s sensitivity and judgement to determine how to achieve the optimal visual impact.

I also used this technique in A2. In certain tense scenes, I opted for cooler tones, further enhancing the film’s overall suspenseful atmosphere. This experience deepened my understanding of how colour grading profoundly shapes the emotional ambience of a film. By adjusting the selection and intensity of colours, I successfully conveyed specific emotions, enabling the audience to immerse themselves more deeply into the narrative.

Synthetic Video Reflection Week 5

This week, I learned a lot of essential knowledge, and the most impressive to me is the application of virtual production technology in filmmaking. We investigated the methods of virtual production employed in TV shows like “The Mandalorian,” “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” and the impending “Ahsoka” series. These methods not only provide filmmakers with more artistic freedom, but they also vastly improve the realism of visual effects. I understand how virtual production utilizes advanced computer graphics technology and special effects synthesis to blend the real and virtual worlds, creating astonishing visual effects. Furthermore, the course also extensively examined the crucial role of lighting in filmmaking. Different colors, brightness levels, and angles of lighting convey diverse emotions, painting vivid emotional atmospheres for the audience. I intend to actively incorporate this technique in my A2 project, using various lighting setups to convey my desired visual language more intuitively.

Additionally, we talked about the core ideas of immersive art and how virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technologies can revolutionize the film industry. I developed a stronger grasp of how to use these technologies in films and how immersive art produces a sense of presence. The XR immersive films and projection mapping showcased at the 2023 Melbourne International Film Festival are new trends in the field of filmmaking, offering significant inspiration for my future learning and creative endeavors.
