We began our class with the task of writing an observation based on nothing but what we notice within a 20 minute walk. This was a really great exercise as it limited the time frame to consider what is ‘interesting’ or ‘note worthy’ for an observation, as oftentimes I’ve not written something down that I did not consider incredibly interesting, thinking that something better would appear in the future.

With this limited timeframe, I was forced to consider the first thing I noticed as the most interesting and expand on that thought as I walked, which in this instance was the sound of the air conditioning sounding identical to the cars and trucks outside, which created a very strange image in my mind that I couldn’t shake, I have forced myself to do a task like this while writing music in the past, as it forces you to use your instincts and essentially your subconscious, and then flesh out your first idea with the self allotted time.

Creative writing has always been my creative weakness, so I was actually very surprised with what I was able to create in such a small amount of time, as at the beginning I was not confident at all that I would be able to create a good piece of writing in such a small amount of time, but I now believe this to be my best, most creatively written observation of the class so far.

The observations I have written so far have been okay in my opinion, but at this stage I much prefer the content inside them then the actual piece of writing that they are. I want to strive in the future to create more interesting pieces of writing, like the air conditioning piece, that can stand on its own, not purely based on the content of the observation, but the language used to describe the content.
