This week’s lecture was run by Kyla Brettle who talked about writing in sound and the medium of audio documentaries and other purely audio works. This is definitely a medium I have not explored, I’ve worked in a lot of areas of sound and music but have never really explored audio in these sorts of areas of podcast and documentaries.

There’s a real intimacy to these mediums that is incredibly hard to achieve using visual media which really interested me and I will definitely explore this area a lot more in the future.

Kyla has a lot of experience in these areas and it was great to have her give us tips to both be able to analyse other people’s work but also how to produce our own. I’ve done some work in sound design and I definitely agreed with her that the more content you have the better, I’ve also found that you’ll have a plan of where and when to use some sounds but once you get into editing it you’ll be using sounds in places you never even thought of, altering them in ways to create completely new sounds.

Here is also a trailer for one of the most unnerving films I’ve ever seen, it plays with sound so well and is truly a unique experience.

“You know music and sound design can be very powerful with how you use it but also the absence of sound can say a lot as well.” – James Wan.
