An outline of the next coming weeks

Whilst I previously outlined my activities in the next coming weeks revolving around shooting a single scene, I have no instead decided to modify my plans.

My idea is going to definitely be difficult to explain in written words, which is perfect, because I think I will have to get used to trying to explain it over email/statement of intentions in the next coming weeks.

My activities will be revolving around a single scene premise, that a girl and boy who dislike each other are forced to have a conversation (be it scripted or without dialogue).

I will be filming this scene a number of different times, where each time I will be stripping away or adding either music, dialogue or an interesting location.

When each of these elements are stripped away, I will be attempting to enhance the emotion of the scene using the remaining elements in a number of different experiments. Each time this will be asking the question, What are the core emotional components of a scene, or, rephrased, How can I emotionally manipulate a scene?

For the location, the “lack of a location” will be a simplistic studio room at RMIT, where the lack of an interesting location will force either the element of music or dialogue to play a more important role. Obviously there are more than just the 3 elements of location, script and music that influence a scene, however due to time constraints and my own personal experience these are the 3 I have decided to work with.

I want to work with a negative relationship between the two because I feel like it will create a really interesting tension that can invite audience intrigue from those watching.

One location I’m really keen to work with is the inside of a car, where there is a real sense of claustrophobia that would be perfect for the emotional tension I’m trying to convey

In terms of music, I hope to explore not only diegetic music (played through the car stereo), but also non-diegetic music added in post, and of course the use of silence, without any music.

The script is something I’m probably going to use the least, as I would really like to instead use the camera, actors, music and location to tell the story and enhance my production skills.

Of course after filming the first couple of experiments, where I decide to take the next experiments will be entirely subject to change, being based off my results and findings of that days experiments detailed in reflections.

Finally, to using actors. For the first round of experiments, I would like to use actors that I know from the class, as this pre-existing connection will allow me to work with them more efficiently and with less small-talk and obligatory constant politeness.

However, if I am running in a timely manner, I will then consider using actors I don’t know, from an acting school that has a connection to our class, full of aspiring actors who have stated their enthusiasm to be part of our projects.

A production schedule and detailed planning of the first day of shooting is in development.
