Tutorial Reflection 21/8

On Friday’s tutorial, we were divided into groups of 4 and given the freedom to attempt to capture the film idea we had always wanted to. Having always had to adjust my ambitions to the extremely limited quality and quantity of equipment I have had access to in the past, this took some time to deliberate on, as I have now been gladly forced to adjust to the plethora of options the amazing equipment at RMIT has given me.

I finally decided upon a simple concept of filming a conversation, and then later editing in the thoughts of one of the characters. This stemmed from my interests with intentions. When we talk to someone, we always have intentions and motivations as to why we are talking to them and what we are talking to them about. Yet we rarely ever verbalize these intentions, especially not during the conversation. I had a fascination with portraying the thoughts of an anxious character, as anxious thoughts often come into my head during tense conversations. Roughly outlining the scene of a paranoid boy attempting to appear knowledgable about sport in order to impress a sport impressed girl, I began filming.

My two actors were brilliant, as they both understood exactly what I was trying to achieve. I would say this is an achievement in my communication skills but really the credit is to their fantastic dramatical abilities. I used 3 different angles to portray the conversation, mainly because that is how I have seen most conversations filmed on screen. Whilst I used an over the should mid-shot to frame the girl, I used an over the shoulder closeup to frame the male character in order to establish that he was the protagonist. An mid shot framing both characters was used in the beginning to establish the scene. Later, I recorder the internalized thoughts of the boy as wild sound to be edited in later.

I think the whole production process of the scene was thoroughly successful. My male actor Tyler was excellent in allowing just the right amount of gaps in his responses to Serena’s questions to edit in his thoughts. I’m hesitant about how well I will be able to sync the dialogue tomorrow, but overall excited about the possibilities of what the final cut of the scene could look like.
