It is my first time want to know the history of music video, so I searched some from the website to help me knowing more about how to make a good music video. The processing of video music:

As I searched, Michael Jackson’s song THRILLER was the most successful, influential and iconic music video of all time was releases in 1983. The real impact of today’s MV musician is Michael Jackson. The album “Thriller” was released in December, 1982, which pushed the development of music videos onto a most highly historical level. Before Michael Jackson, MTV was only showing the singer to sing in front of the camera, very boring. But Michael Jackson is the first one to add dance into the music video and the video was the pioneer of the ‘Storyline’ video which has a plot, almost like a ‘mini’ movie. It contains sophisticated visuals and it took the music industry to another level. Now music videos were really being seen as promotion and made into high-budget productions. Madonna was famous by the MTV in the 1980s, she was highly dependent on MTV to promote her music. In 1984 MTV produced its first “MTV Video Music Award, and later the award in recognition of achievements from Michael Jackson in the MTV and changed it to “Michael Jackson MTV Video Music Awards”. To be honest, I hardly ever listen to Michael Jackson’ song except ‘Beat It’, but I still cannot ignore the musical achievement that he made.

Actually, I even did not know the course topic until the first class, because of taking the 2.5yrs degree, therefore, MEDIA 2 in summer semester is compulsory for me. After knowing that we are going to study music video in summer semester, I feel quite interested. Wikipedia said a music video is a short film integrating a song and imagery, produced for promotional or artistic purposes. As I think, music video is a feeling from the song that singer wants to tell us.

I used to watch music video from YouTube and another Chinese website called ‘Yinyue Tai’. In China, singers usually pick their popular songs to make the music video. To be honest, I cannot find good creative music video very often and I feel bored to watch all the narrative plots. However, I did find some good music video from China, like the ‘Better Me’ from singer Kaiqi Xue and the ‘Gushi’ from band Sudalv. Maybe I will tell more information about these two music video in the blog post.

In the course Making Media, I have not study any editing skills which makes me feel unhappy, especially teacher asked you to do the video project without telling you how to shoot and edit. I hope this could be better in Media 2, I really want the skill about shooting and editing.
