Rough Cut / Feedback

Here is the feedback from Cindy for our rough cut :

Mr Huang

Besides being an older man he represents one of the many from other lands that makes Australia whole.  Fantastic that you found someone to speak in their own language – subtitling can be a lot of work but rewarding.  You should look for a TV standard and use that the font is too large and placed too low.

Do you have more shots of Mr Huang interacting with customers if so use some up the front so he’s not just doing the displays.  Show the whole gamut of his job upfront as it makes it more impressive with the arthritis he has.

There is a bit too much about his medication – once he describes he couldn’t stand because of his arthritis and he had heart surgery you get that the man is not well.  Yes he takes a lot of pills but his life is not about that.  He refuses to see himself ill and gets up at 2am to work at the markets and be amongst it.

It’s great that you have him at home as well as at the market.

Archival footage?  In future of you have to use placeholders put a brief description of what you intend to place there to give the viewer an idea of the imagery to strengthen the story content and or emotion of what is being said.

Looking forward to seeing how Mr Huang comes together.

Cindy gave us a powerful feedback with some significant suggestions. Firstly, she advised us to change the style of the subtitling. As we had an hour of interviewing needed to be subtitled, we roughly did the subtitling without thinking of the font and displacement. Therefore, we had to work on the language and change the font to the standard format. Secondly, Cindy pointed out that we had a bit too much about Mr. Huang’s medication. However, after discussing with Rohan, we decided to ignore this part. Lastly, she gave us a recommendation on having more footages of Mr Huang interacting with customers and obtaining the archival footage. Our team has discussed and is going to reshoot some of the footage and ask Mr. Huang of his family albums and teacher certificate for archival footage.
