Week 11 – Initiative post

reality-tv

After reading lots of academic recourses, we decided to focus on the topic of Reality TV for our Project Brief 4. Unlike other shows such as news programs or documentary films, reality TV allows audiences to imagine themselves as actual participants.Reality television uses the narrative structures to give shape to the events on camera and producers in the programs using narrative to drive of people’s emotional responses to step into the story. It is important that these reality TV shows deliver much enjoyment to the viewers and explore its power to make audience members feel like part of the action. This ‘action’ ought to be interesting where the audiences want to be a part of.

In my research finding, the overly dramatic, preposterous storylines and characters often occurred in the Reality TV shows, but why there are still having the incredible amounts of viewers who still tune in? I think it is because “authenticity” is not the primary requirement for audience to focus. “There’s a line between, you know, true reality and reality that’s entertaining” was a view recorded by a participant in a study for the Journal of Consumer Research. The research remarked that the reality show of Big Brother was “too real” which did not entertain the audiences. That is the reason why in today’s reality programs there are dramatic and unlikely setting, scripts and characters behind the show. I think that to make a good reality TV show these days, entertainment value is beyond the audiences’ daily ‘real’ life, like look, we don’t want to simply watch ourselves do we?
