Egg Hunting #20 – Reflection on final music video work

I’m not a perfectionist, yet I am not satisfied with the result of this production. It is a great work but a little bit off from what I expected. There are many things could have been improved in the production. In terms of how the final version compares to the pitched idea, there are not much difference. As we planned, the female protagonist listens to “Good Vibes & Regrets” while unbeknownst to her, NeuMark mystically appears and disappears singing at her. One thing that has changed was to exclude some locations. Initially in our pitched idea, we decided to film at 8 different locations, such as at home, street, pool, gym, spa, car wash, karaoke and bar. However, as suggested by Rohan, we had reduced the production into four different locations as on the street, spa, car park and karaoke. Another small change was that the female protagonist supposed to use the earphone throughout the music video as we pitched. However, we thought it would be better if she didn’t use it as NeuMark was singing to her like the music came out from the earphone.

In terms of improvements, there are few things that I would definitely want to make better. Firstly, make a proper shot lists for filming. For the production this time, we didn’t write a proper shot lists, instead we only had our shot lists in mind or rather a simple one. So when it came to the actual shooting day, we didn’t know what to do or what shots should we have. As a result, we were lost and wasting lots of time discussing and planning on the shooting day. If I have the opportunity next time, I will absolutely plan a proper shot lists before shooting. Secondly, bring along the lighting equipment. As I said in the last post, the lighting in the karaoke was super dark. We had to use flashlight on our phones and also use a high ISO in the camera. As a result, the footages didn’t look good and were with many noises. Lastly, I want to improve my skill as a camera operator. This is my first time operating the camera without anyone’s help. (Everyone in our group is newbies) Hence, many of shots are unfocused and shaky, especially in hand-held shots. To improve this, I have to learn from others and have more practices.

Even though the result is not from what I expected, there are still many great works are successful in the production. My favourite part of this music video is the storyboard. The idea of the singer appears and disappears to the female protagonist is really amusing. It gives the viewers space to imagine what will happen next. The last part when two protagonists finally see each other also creates another vibe of fascinating. Another successful part of the music video is the editing. The footage sequence in this video is really important. If one step wrong, the video will look weird. I think our member surely done a great and hard work in editing.

One thing that makes this music video successful is through our collaboration. In our groups, everyone takes in different role of production. Chloe leaded the production design and direction, Grace helped as a production manager and runner, Even leaded the editing while I took charge of camera operation. Every member does a really great work accordingly and we always work together and help each other. Collaboration is a powerful tool in driving us to this stage. Ever has an african proverb said “If you want to go fast go alone if you want to go far go together”.
