Uses of Photography – Week 6

This week we have been talked about photo essays. Photo essay is like storytelling which we use the collection of photographs to tell a story. Like the classic narrative structure in film or television, photography does have its own narrative structure that helps the viewers understand the story in an emotional way.

Brian taught us a way to construct a story in 4 categories:

  1. Establishing image – context and environment. Often recorded from a high vantage point.
  2. Action image – medium-distance capturing action and interaction of people.
  3. Portraits – often essential to any story people are interested in people.
  4. Close-up or detail image – need to identify significant detail within the overall scene and then enlarge it to draw the viewers’ attention to it.

In order to prepare for our project brief 3, I was teamed up with Rachel for providing the subject to shoot with each other. A friend of mine working as a hair stylist is extremely willing to help us for the project and I think Rachel could definitely collaborate with him to get a great photo essay. On the other hand, Rachel introduced me her friend who loves filming and sketching. We have arranged the shooting time with each partner where I will be going to the subject’s workplace after our Easter break. I am really looking forward to work with the subject who I have never met and I hope that we can have a great collaboration in this project.
