Recording Place Log #14

What could I do differently

Firstly, I need to say I am pretty satisfied with our outcome of the project however there are something we could have done it better. Honestly, we do not have much time for our production and most of our team members are new to the equipments and softwares. We need to plan, film, interview, and edit in only 6 weeks. Hence, there are some improvements for us to make.

  • Filming

We have created a log sheet for each video granules. As you can see, there are lots of shots are unable to use due to shakiness and over exposed. The reason is that most of us are new to the equipments, so we do not have much experience on controlling the camera. Moreover, some of the audio in the video clips are not so good which have too much background noise. While we were doing the observational filming, we couldn’t get too close to the stall because we did not want to bother others’ business. In the result, we were too far from our object and we recorded the unnecessary noise. In my opinion, I think we have to continuously practicing and become more professional on filming.

  • Interview

I think the part that we have to improve the most is the interview. The most serious problem during the interviewing was that we did not use the mini mic for Mr. Huang in the result of unclear voice. This was definitely a big mistake that we realised when we checked on our interview footage. Moreover, we did not check the background noise when we started the interviewing in the result of a big noise from the fan in the background throughout the whole interview. Hence, I think we could have done it better if we fixed the problems.

The other problem was that Mr. Huang did not answer in the full sentence for the interview. Before the interview, I had given instruction to Mr. Huang of the way answering the question in full sentence. (include the questions in the answers) However, Mr. Huang totally forgot while the camera was on. Fortunately, our team was able to add on subtitling to make the audiences have a better understanding on Mr. Huang’s interview.

  • Post Production

I did not contribute too much on editing as I mainly work on the production stage. The only thing I would do to improve is the audio of the video clips. I think for our documentary there are still some of background noise which is unable to remove. Fortunately, we have a nice background music which helps us to cover the noise. Moreover, I think next time we could include the old home video such us Mr. Huang’s teaching video back in his hometown to make the documentary be more interesting.
