Pitch Presentation/Interview Question

Today we had our pitch presentation. In the pitch, we discussed about Mr. Huang’s store, the visual textures and aural textures. We intend to firstly capture the calm, early morning, as the stallholders set up for their day of trading with long sweeping takes and soft hues, reminiscent of Melbourne’s waking hours.This we feel will be the perfect counterpoint to the chaos of the market in full swing. As the story progresses, we hope to visually mimic the fast-paced rhythmic nature of market, as people flood in, with the use of high saturation and short sharp cuts. A point of conflict within the story of Mr Huang is that he is now having difficulties adding the cost of customers purchases, thusly, we’d like to recreate the overwhelming nature of this situation, with the coverage of the market at its peak time. We also talked about how we are going to design our documentary including interviewing with our subject Mr. Huang, his family and the playfully antagonistic stallholder who trades next to Mr Huang. This will hopefully give a myriad of perspectives on Mr. Huang and hopefully garner some interesting stories.

Rohan gave us advise on dividing the group into two while shooting and interviewing because we are a big group of six members. Also, he suggested us not to interview the family and the stallholder who trades next to Mr Huang yet as we want to get the information from Mr. Huang first before we move on to others.

Afterwards, we went to the editing suit to input some of footages and discuss about the interview questions.

Here are the questions we initially set up for Mr. Huang’s interview on Wednesday:

1. What do you usually do in your leisure time? (if you do not have to work) Do you have any hobbies?
2. Why did you choose to come to Australia?
3. When you first came to Australia, did you come with your family or your friend or through any agency? (immigration process?)
4. Have you found any difficulties environmental inadequacies when you first came to Australia?
5. There are other options, why do you choose to work as greengrocer?
6. What did you do before working as greengrocer in QVM?
7. As an age of retiring person, why do you continuously want to work?  (boring? any motivation?) Have you thought about retiring?
8. Do you experience any difficulties when you are working in the past few years? (with the age increasing)
9. After working in here for more than 20 years, would you miss your hometown in China? So would you want to go back to your hometown? What about after retired?

After talking to Rohan, he suggested us to rearrange the question order and refine a bit as follows:

1. Introduce yourself, where do you work
2. Can you tell us where you came from and what you were doing before this? Was it difficult coming to Australia?
3. Can you walk us through a day working at the market – step by step – I wake up early…
4. Who do you work with?
5. What sort of relationship / friendship do you have with the workers at the stalls around you?
6. What aspects of a day at the market do you enjoy?
7. You appear to be a little bit older than your colleagues. Does working at the Market keep you young at heart.
8. Can you tell us what aspects of serving customers are becoming more difficult as you get older?
9. Have you always lived alone?
10. Do you get homesick for China?
11. Is the Market a place where you feel part of a community?

As Mr. Huang does not speak English fluently we have a Chinese version of interview questions where the interview will be in Mandarin.

8. 你能告诉我们一下，随着年龄的增长，在服务客人中的哪个方面，你觉得做起来越来越困难了呢？
9. 你长期一个人居住吗？
10. 你有没有思念家乡？
11. 你有没有觉得市场就像一个大家庭一样？
