Recording Place Log #1

First Class/PB1

In the first class, Rohan discussed about the course and the further assessments. We also get to watch his documentary film, Winter at Westbeth. Then we moved on to our first task for the studio. The first task was an observational exercise where we were required to visit Queen Victoria Market and take note about where you are, what you can see, smell, hear. We were also asked to find three people that we find interesting and describe them in detail.

I went to the market on Thursday before the class. As I went in the morning, I didn’t find anything really interest me. However, that day was the first time where I met Mr. Huang – our main subject for the documentary film.

Here are some notes I made for Mr. Huang on that day:

I am at a vendor which sells vegetables and fruits in the corner of Queen Victoria Market. There are two sides of the vendor where one side with all the green vegetables and the other side with all kinds of fruits. There are name tags put on each item which make the customers recognise the vegetables and fruits easier. The sellers also use Chinese name tag for the items where it benefits those Chinese customers. Standing in front of the stall, I can smell the strong smell from the vegetable and the sweet smell from the fruits. There are vendors peddling and customers gossiping between each other.

There are five sellers in this vendor. Seems like they came from Hong Kong because they communicate in Cantonese between each other. (After talking to them, I realised they are from Guangdong which is part of China.) The male seller looks a bit older where his action is slow and he has difficulties in calculating the price. The two female sellers are communicating happily and giving some fruits tries to the customers. As they can communicate in Chinese, they draw lots of attention from the Chinese tourist.
