Week 12 – Initiative post

PrintI was doing my research for my contextual studies of popular culture. I found out that due to social media’s feature of anonymity, people abuse this feature and one of its main disadvantage is Cyberbullying or spread of hate mails. Cyberbullying could be limited to posting rumors or gossips about a person in the Internet bringing about hatred in other’s minds; or it may go to the extent of personally identifying victims and publishing materials severely defaming and humiliating them. Here are some examples of cyberbullying:

  • Being sent mean or hurtful text messages from someone you know or even someone you don’t know
  • People sending photos and videos of you to others to try and embarrass or hurt you
  • People spreading rumours about you social networking sites or text messages
  • People trying to stop you from communicating with others
  • People stealing your passwords or getting into your accounts and changing the information there
  • People setting up fake profiles pretending to be you, or posting messages or status updates from your accounts

Cyberbullying is common among teens and has been on the rise. It affects the mental and emotional well being of youths. Often many teenagers choose to commit suicide as a result of Cyberbullying or the so reading of hate mails and one example of this is the American boy who commuted suicide by jumping from the Hudson River when his roommate recorded his activities and uploaded them in the school website revealing that the boy is gay. This case received World wide attention as celebrities such as Ellen DeGeneres discussed his suicide in her talk show, stating how social media has the power to destroy and harm lives. Moreover children are easy victims of such crimes in social media. Often they are innocent targets of Pedophiles and easily believe adults they meet online. As a result they many be emotionally and psychologically scarred from young due to cyber stalker or learn crude or harmful values thorough such interaction.
