To begin the first day of week 2, we had the former student Jeremy Bowtell who spoke about the concept of editing in media. Personally, I think editing is very important for any kind of media. It presents as the last step of production and shows the perfect final performance to the audiences. Jeremy first discussed editing is juxtaposition that combining parts to create new meaning and he showed us an example of “Man with the Movie Camera (1929)”. This film presented as an early example of editing and how it combined the gaps and created meaning to the audiences.

He also showed us a romantic scene from “Casino” directed by Martin Scorsese. The scene described how Sam meets Ginger with the quick shots jumping between both of them. There is no conversation but only music and eye contact among them. However, we know there is something special going up. That is how amazing the editing is. There are only simple shots between the actors but they present the meaning to the audience effectively even without any words.

After this lecture, I understand how important the editing is. Editing is not a simple work, the film maker need to decide carefully how to edit the sequence and if the scene needs to be cut or putting forward or backward to make the story efficiently transferring the meaning to the audience. The lecture also gives me a sense of how to do an effective editing for my further project.
