Week 1 – Reading “The Passion Trap”

We should follow our passion, shouldn’t we? Cal Newport had mentioned that people are following their passion to get their dream jobs, which however, may ultimately lead them to the “passion trap”.

“Do what you like, and love what you do” that’s what I had been told since I was young. However, the environment has changed, we cannot always follow our passion. A survey done by U.S. job satisfaction shows that only 45% of Americans are satisfied at their work place. So why would people spend time on something they don’t like? Reality. Yes, you can follow your passion to get your dream job but are you able to survive in the environment or are you even able to find your dream job? For people who are not satisfied with their work place, it’s mostly because they are unhappy with their work, or they find it uninteresting and they want to go to a better place. In the video, Newport stated the law of “telling a young person to follow their passion reduces the probability of them remaining passionate”. It simply means they fell into the “passion trap”. When people keep focusing on what they like, they tend to grow increasingly unhappy with what they have right now.

However, I do not fully agree with the quote, “Don’t follow your passion”. You only live once, so why would you spend so much time on things you are unhappy with? Would you want to give up on your dream only because of money? Thus, I think we have to put enough effort to balance both passion and reality which makes it most productive to our lives.
