A1 – Media-making reflection

1.Interviewing

  • What did you learn through the process?

During interviewing on both the test and the final assignment, I learnt how important it is to prepare your questions beforehand because I feel that if I have questions that delves into “why this art is important to you?”, I might have more narrative driven content and better grabs.

  • What worked well?

I think my interviewee came up with good answers and that the way he phrases his answers, makes the audience know what the questions were being asked. This would make it easier for me to cut myself out when I’m editing. I also like that he spoken about his personal experience with the artwork.

  • What could you do better? i.e. What issues did you have to work through?

I feel like I should have asked “Is there anything else you like to add?” as this question can provoke thoughts that he wanted or add to when I was asking some questions. I think another thing I could do better is the framing which I would take into consideration if our primary publication is Instagram, meaning I might want to record it vertical format.

2.Technical considerations

  • What did you learn through the process?

It’s hard when the interviewer and interviewee has different devices to record on. Since mine is a PC, I don’t have access to Quicktime and the equivalent for PC is OBS, but it doesn’t work on my laptop. I think this is good practice for me as if I will ever interview someone virtually through Zoom again, I can asked them to use Quicktime if they have MAC which I have not done in pervious interviews for different studios.

  • What worked well?

As my interviewee was a MAC user, the quality of the webcam is good and I think the framing of my interviewee made it easy for me not to scale or position the shot for this assignment. Since, I had experience with editing, I think the subtitles was a nice touch and that I used the Mcclelland gallery’s website font for the opening text.

  • What could you do better? i.e. What issues did you have to work through? (Thinking about the steps: recording, editing and post-production through to creating and adding in graphics, subtitling and exporting)

I feel like the editing aspect could have been better. Even if it’s just an assembly roll, I feel that adding the right music can help. And I think that a clean transition would help make the video more engaging and perhaps create a brand look likewise to Tate or ArtBasel’s Instagram videos.

3.Editing an interviewled narrative

  • What did you learn through the process? (Thinking about the steps: logging, assembly, finalizing the audio edits and narrative, spacing the audio, etc.)

This was the first time I heard of logging, and I think this helps to construct the narrative clearer as transcribing the interview helps me to note down what is best and what I think is not worth the trouble to add.

  • What worked well?

I think the narrative and subtitles worked well together and that it fulfills the assignment brief. Also the fact the interviewee did not move too much makes the cuts more smooth and doesn’t have distinct jump cuts. I also wanted to focused on the personal aspect instead of what the artwork is. So I thought the grabs I chose, highlight the variety of street art from different people which doesn’t seem direct which is what reminds me of other art videos we watched in class.

  • What could you do better? i.e. What issues did you have to work through?

I wish I could work on the audio element. Since the source is originally from the laptop microphone. I wish I had some time to learn how to edit audio with Audition or Protools and what it meant with “compressed” audio.
