As necessary in all media studios, collaboration is the key to produce a successful body of work. While most of my friends, who study different degrees, loathe group work I find it very enjoyable. I may have lucked out with all the people i have collaborated with, as majority of my group members have been like minded and very fun to work with. As a group, we were able to achieve so much more than I had imagined. We did not have that much time to pre produce, plan or shoot a full scale project, but we made the most of the time we had. Our aim was to make one video that we would proudly display on our portfolio.
While we have yet to finish editing our video, with the shots we do have we are really proud of. While we officially shot for only two days, we also shot the story board and tests shots thoroughly and this could not have been done if none of us gave up our time or effort. My friends complain of their group members not coming to meetings, which definitely was not an option for us. While family emergencies did arise, there were always three of us together shooting and each person had a different task. I was responsible for driving, Sam and Alana responsible for booking equipment and editing suites, while Daleen picked up the equipment. Our dynamic worked really well as a group and we allowed everyone to have their own creative discretion. We did not assign a director or assistant, everyone had a go and could take over a shot by just asking. While someone was filming, we did not interfere, which also allowed us to look at the environment and plan the scenes ahead. When I found a little ladybug on the floor (probably our best shot, as we plan on using it when she says ‘sentiment will creep in’), that was completely by chance as Sam was filming and I was trying to see where else there was good lighting. This also happened with the dead moth in the lake, Daleen and I were directing an emotional shot and trying to explain it to our actor, when sam saw the dead moth and decided to capture it.
We worked really well as a team and decided we should continue shooting together in the future, with more time, different locations and storylines. There may be a really weird series we shoot based on foot fetishes and asmr… stay tuned!
