Our first official day of shooting was planned and scheduled meticulously. We knew we had limited time with out actress and had to make the most of a shooting day. We cleared one of the living rooms of my house, where there was the most natural light. When discussing where we would shoot this section, we were stuck between Alana’s room and my living room, we either wanted our character in a smaller and more cozy space, or in an empty room. The decision to use the mirror, came from the videos we watched in the studio, where mirrors and reflections added layers to the scene. Since these scenes had no specific action, we thought using a mirror could add an interesting touch to an otherwise boring scene. We played with the dimensions of the mirror, close ups and even filming her from outside of the house. The first shot we practiced for an hour doing, was of Bay staring into the mirror and us slowly moving the camera from one side to another. We used towels and struggled with turning, as we would always shake the camera. After many practice shots and pins and needles on our behalf, we managed to get a semi stable shot. For the next sequence, where we get closer from behind, Sam pushed the camera on a towel and we were basically all stretched for the rest of the shoot.
Initially we had no plans to shoot in the backyard, near the flowers but we went outside for some fresh air and thought lets just keep shooting whatever. We even burnt some dried flowers that I had at home, capturing the smoke. Even if we do not use those shots or even like them now, editing always changes how we see things. I also learnt a lot about working with an actor, even though Bay is friends with Sam, it was beneficial for all of us to be acquainted before the longer and bigger shoot at Macedon. We spent time in between takes laughing and getting to know one another, which also helped us direct her comfortably.
While we have yet to edit the footage, from the stills above I know that I would want to have a very subtle colour grade. I would focus more and play around with the exposure and contrast and work less on the hue and saturation/tint.
