We decided that before our official shoot, we should test out our fairly new storyboard. We decided that we would shoot at Mount Macedon once again and very early on a Saturday morning we went out to shoot. As luck would have it, it was the first day of warm weather in Melbourne and we captured a lot of sunlight. I generally prefer a cloudy day since I find that over exposure is never a problem. Sunlight proved to be better, as we were able to capture more interesting shots by playing with shadows and lens flares.
This shoot was especially necessary since our story changed so much. We wanted to be inventive and bold but also did not want to waste the time on the day of our official shoot. We tried to use the hands to grab at our actor, representing all the unknown people to her yet on camera and screen, the shot had no appeal. We struggled to find ways to show all the unknown people our actor is mourning. We wanted to build small memorials but once again did not translate well on camera. Playing with light had a major impact on our experimental short, as it added depth and a cinematic look to our experimental short.
The struggle to find actions for the actor to do was very real. We knew how she felt but could not form an action sequence. Shooting the storyboard again and becoming even more familiar with our location was the best choice we made. I believe going forward, on the first days of our official shoot, it will go very successfully as we have, to an extent learnt what translates to screen and what does not quite work. Regardless of what we may think, I do believe that trying something to see it does not work is the best option, rather than not trying or seeing how it looks on screen.
