The class exercises were very insightful and stressful at the same time. Paul kept reminding us that these shots would be the beginning of our film-making career and I wanted to live upto my own standards. We learnt the basics of how to operate the cameras and I had not used such a technical camera since the summer intensive and was surprised by how much I had forgotten. Even though I had used an older camera, I forgot even the basic functions and was surprised by how quick my memory faded. I thought of camera operating as an automatic process, kind of like riding a bike but I was very wrong. I forgot all about white balance but surprisingly remembered the importance of the zebra function. So like all things, practice makes perfect and using a camera is not a natural process and it must be learned.
While I consider making my bed an everyday task therefore not interesting, the homework exercise forced me to think of making my bed in an interesting way. I wanted to give context to my bedroom, by showing the view I wake up to every morning and my cat, who claims my bed as his. After I finished shooting and started exporting, many more ideas and camera angles came to mind. Even during the shooting process, I had a few trial and error shots that I filtered through during editing. While I do know that during a shoot, you do not always have the time to experiment, as a student who is still in the process of learning, I would like to take my time to shoot. I am aware that in the last few weeks of semester, shooting and experimenting is difficult, I know that atleast the homework and class exercises will prepare me for the final project.
