For the project brief one assessment, finding a photographer was more difficult than I had imagined. I created a portfolio of famous photographers for a past photography elective and out of all of them, Stephen Dupont’s work spoke to me most. I wondered how I could incorporate his photojournalism and imitate his work for the second project brief. I decided I should try to use a different photographer, but after looking at many names I thought that going with my favourite was a better idea.

With Stephen Dupont’s work, I loved the pink hued and grainy images he has. I also feel like his photos are very different to other photographs I’ve seen of the conflicts in Afghanistan. He embodies the human experience with simple photos. The struggle is having to imitate his style of work in a completely different environment. I have previously achieved the pink coloured skies at sunset, but the feeling and subjects of the photograph is what makes it unique.

It would be wiser of me to choose a different photographer, perhaps one that is ‘easier’ to imitate stylistically. I like the work of some instagram photographers but wonder if they classify as ‘known photographers’ and if social media is considered a legitimate platform for art.

While trying to find different photographers, I came to the realisation that I can recreate dupont’s pictures. I thought that the pink hue was easy to do and once i found the correct subject, I could recreate his shots with a twist. There is no way for me to capture the same feeling of his photos, but I could get close to it with a western approach. what drew me to the images before I researched them was the simplicity, feeling and also the subject. I intend to take similar shots with a chosen subject, in outdoor settings, similar yet westernised compared to dupont’s.

To achieve Dupont’s look, I would have to use a wide angle lens for some shots and take them just before the sun sets for the pink hues. And for some of his portraiture, I will try to imitate the broken glass and subject looking back, with a smile on his face but sadness in his eyes.
