Walking into class on what felt like the hottest thursday ever, the first thing I saw was the camera and tripod bags. I had very briefly in media 1, used a video to record a survival guide for the first few weeks of university. It was a very simple exercise and the first time I had ever used such a big camera. Rohan’s class was significantly different compared to that class in Media 1.
Since i had completed a photography elective before hand, I used the jargon and knowledge of that to understand the sony camera. I knew what a white balance was but had never used the custom balance and the biggest difference had to be the exposure. On a dslr I find that there are many settings that enable me to make sure I am not overexposing an image, but not so much on the sony. with a few practice shots and experimenting, I am sure I will get the hang of it.
Using a custom white balance is my favourite thing to do. I wish I knew about the difference it makes to video and photos before hand. We place a small sheet of white paper infront of the lens and with the press of a few buttons, the lighting changed drastically for the better. No more yellow or blue looking shots!
we then left class and took some observational shots of the Queen Victoria Market. I found this exercise tedious, as I had a difficult time trying to decide where to film from. Filming in the city is always challenging. There are people, cars, trams, buses, trucks etc blocking the shot. I also found it difficult to film shaded areas of the market. I found that no matter what i did the sunny parts, for example the market place vs the road remained overly exposed. To counter this I believe I should either reposition the camera to avoid those areas or change the aperture for better video quality.
