“The medium is the message”

 

 

In reference to McMahon’s quote, the medium I am intrigued by is the medium created through online video. Platforms like youtube where the consumer is also the creator, as said in the video by nerdwriter1, have created a new environment in the digital age. McMohan believed that the message received when consuming media was incidental. From my understanding he meant that while our perception of a newstory is incidental, it is written or shown in a certain way were the ‘incidental’ message is controlled. Media is literally the world around us and the changes to the media landscape is causing deterioration of power for those who have tried to control our environments. After the 9/11 incidents, the media then and now continue to write articles and show the middle East in a dehumanising way, however with the rise of social media voices, the voice of certain media outlets is diminishing. Fox news, CNN and other major news outlets are made mockery of online.
