Before becoming a media student, I knew little to nothing about Copyright and Creative Commons. To be completely honest I thought that copyright was an extreme measure for a $130 billion dollar music industry and an $88 billion dollar film industry. My way of thinking has since changed, as a new content creator. Copyright protects the hard work of anyone with in any industry and creative commons is a fair way of using material made for use by other creators.

Finding content that is shared for free with no intention of commercial use, shows the true creative freedom of the creator. Not to belittle the work of creators who need the support of advertisements and sponsorships, which has opened up a whole new world of marketing.

Fair use is a new area I have discovered that I intend to learn more about. From the knowledge I have acquired about fair use, I have learn that it sits on the fence of copyright. For instance film posters are considered fair use on my blog, as there is no commercial purpose.

So the next time we listen to a song or watch a film, we should think about the creative community and the amount of work they put into that song or film. Downloading, pirating, plagiarism… these are all crimes that we should be careful not to commit!!
