The complexity behind a film or any form of media, is something I had not thought about until the lectorial on Monday. As a film lover, I realised that I consume films so passively when I should have a more active role as both a critic and audience member. When I watch my favourite films I never took notice that each and every frame and second of the film was thought through and edited. Films don’t just exist, they are created, like all creative content in the world.
Walter Murch, a well known film and sound editor discusses editing effectively as a key strategy to successful film making. According to Murch, an edit or a cut in a film must: evoke emotion, add depth to the story and must be a rhythmic cut.
A film maker decided precisely when and how to edit a sequence, which essentially becomes the film. A film maker has control over how he/she makes the audience feel. Horror films are edited in a completely different manner when compared to romance films, as a result the two genres evoke contrasting emotions. When I think about all of the films that changed me as a person, I now know to appreciate the art of the film maker.
