Question 2: Select from one of the readings from week 5, 6 or 7 and describe two points that you have taken from it. Points that excite you: something that was completely new to you.
Rabiger, M. Directing: film techniques and aesthetics, (p. 385-400). 3rd ed. Boston: Focal Press, 2003.
This reading was incredibly insightful and helpful for me, as it allowed me to gain a better understanding of what everyone’s responsibilities are as members of a film crew.
Not only does it go through the obvious necessities, such as the vitality of Commitment, identities and ideas (p.386), but also provides a detailed explanation of what everyone’s role mean and requires, and how it works together with other roles.
I was so fortunate to end up with a group that works so well together and are so willing to help one another out. During this entire process we have not had one argument or disagreement, supporting one another and working collaboratively to make decisions. Whilst the reading does make some rather humorous statements such as saying that directors tend to “go into depression and/or physical illness at the end of a production” (p.390), it does mention traits that I think I have/ hope to acquire during this process.
This reading made a point of mentioning how important good communication is, and because I am taking my job very seriously, I want my group to know they have open communication with me as well as everyone else, and I have taken it upon myself to inform everyone on everything that is going on, with anything that pops up, be it good or bad news, being directly communicated to the rest of the team.
With everyone having specific roles and being in charge of different aspects, this will mean that everyone has a clear idea of what they must do, resulting in less conflict from overlapping responsibilities.
