In the tute we screened a short film called Rolling – a film made in Film-TV1 a few years ago.
In 300 words or less describe what you thought worked or didn’t.
I thoroughly enjoyed ‘Rolling’, such a simple concept that is well constructed through script and characters, and I think that the students who made this film prove that the film we will be producing this semester doesn’t need to be complex and elaborate.
I thought the camera movement was done really well, slow shots reflecting the banality of the everyday life, through the aisles of the supermarket and in the apartment.
Furthermore, I really liked the simplicity and humour of the script, which was realised and played well by the actors. The relationship was clear and the script had the perfect amount of speech to not only explain the narrative and aid the plot progression, but also explain the circumstances. I did think that the male actor was stronger than the female, in that I felt awkwardness when watching the female. That being said, I did appreciate the difficulty she may have had to portray her character.
I think the locations were well established, I really liked the male’s flat, however I was a bit confused as to why they were in an Asian grocers.
Altogether, I think ‘Rolling’ set a really good standard for other Film-Tv students, showing that a seemingly uncomplicated narrative can turn into a well developed, thought through and successful short film.
