IM: Week 2

2) I have previously had little motivation to engage with lectures, seeing them as a chore to attend. If I had a question or an issue I would not persist in gaining clarification, instead just letting it go unsolved. In order to identify my strengths and areas needing improvement, I will document my engagement in a weekly blog post of minimum 2-3 paragraphs.

As embarrassing this is, even after attending the lecture, I don’t really understand what was said apart from something about a botanist. This is in no disrespect to Adrian or the rest of the teachers, I am still having trouble coming to grips with what the subject is really about, what it requires from me, why I have to do…stuff.
Watching the Jonny Cash project was super interesting however and raised the issue of COPYRIGHT, something that has been discussed right from the start of my Media course. So how on earth, with this project, are people able to essentially, take people’s artwork, compile and alter it then broadcast it for the entire world to see? We as uni students run the risk of getting expelled if we copy even one sentence from a book in an essay that 1 singular teacher is going to read. Why is it ok then, for someone to do it where the “readership” is millions of people?
It is something many people have been grappling with for a while and it has resurfaced over and over again. Once you post a picture on instagram or facebook, technically, you do not have sole ownership of it anymore. Scary right?
Type in your name into Google, then click images…tada, your profile picture comes up. Some may find this scary, others cool, other aren’t fazed and may go back to smoking their joint, but I for one am somewhat concerned. Google never asked if they could use that photo. They are like super rich right, so should I ask them for money? I own that photo….don’t I?…DON’T I!?!?
Anyway, if you haven’t heard of the Jonny Cash project, I urge you to type it into Google as it is actually really cool, but until then, let us all consider what we think we own and what we actually do!
