Comedy A1 Week 1

In week one we mainly looked at the idea of incongruity or surprise and how it can create comedy. Surprise comedy is what I think is probably the biggest form of comedy in the modern age. Looking at most viral comedic titkoks you will find most if not all of them play with the idea of a surprise to some extent, such as skits/planned comedy where there is a weird/off-putting character or a video of a real-life event where the humour comes from something random or surprising happens. By far incongruity is most likely the easiest comedy for someone to create as rather than needing wit or practice, a simple surprise can make anyone laugh, though I don’t view it as a lesser comedic value as in most cases it pretty much always makes me laugh.

From the reading “From Dionysia to Hollywood: An Introduction to Comedy’s Long (and Bumpy) Road” I thought it was interesting to point out the fact that film criticism often overlooks comedy as a lesser genre when compared to dramas or other genres. While I agree comedy is overlooked, It is also a genre that doesn’t usually lend itself to much on the technical side, many of the most famous comedic films are carried purely by acting and writing, which while still impressive is not what film is all about, so when looking at the comedic film genre as a whole i don’t think it’s a shock that critics and the academy overlook them in favour of more technically impressive films.

My video responds to the idea of ‘incongruity’ as it has an element of randomness that i thought was a little funny, though I can admit it was a very last-minute idea that i could quickly make without much hassle. I am not much of an actor or someone who loves being on camera so i tried to find a way to work around that while still making something entertaining
