Reading and Instruments. Bloody Nails.

Adrian Hit the nail on it’s bloody head.

The comparison of experiencing difficulty reading a passage to playing a part in a song that is difficult, really rings true to me. When I stumble on a riff, a chord progression or fingerpicking technique, it doesn’t stop me from playing the rest of the song. Most recently, struggling to create fluency in The Beatles – Dig a Pony opening and closing riff, I slowed myself down. I sung it out so I could hear the song and riff clearly giving me somewhere to aim for. I repeated and repeated and repeated it.

The fact that for so long this hasn’t really occurred to me, that it’s connected to reading styles is embarrassing to me but so gosh darn sensical. Why I have put a wall to reading in such a way is because I think that when you’re confronted with multiple dense readings for different classes seems overwhelming. I just gotta do it. Slow myself down, keep highlighting and making notes, and re-read.
